Mixed media

Process, during which the works have been completed in different mediums. With an aim to find new opportunities and to develop them both on mental and material levels. The starting object "a colorspot on film" transforms in size, weight, substance and material. The themes are: image or material substance, copy or original, painting or photo sculpture, is the copy a similarity or an analogy, what is the difference between a picture and a painting?

First process:

The spot of color fits onto an A4-sized film, purple-blueish from the edges and black-greyish shape in the middle. This abstract image is the only original, all other phases of the transformation are copies, deformed reflection of the same colorspot.

Second process:

Author prints the A4 image as a carpet textile, 10m in length and 1m 50cm in width. It is the same image, but in a much larger scale, this expression depicting a river is abstract of nature, but a copy of the A4-sized painted colorspot. The transformation has happened both in scale, weight, subject and material.
Different nuances appear on this image on a large textile, it is now possible to see the mixture of the colors bigger – previously hidden, small bubbles have now become visible, also the reflections of light look better – things that could not be physically seen in the A4 format, because the shape was too small. As a material it is easy to handle, by placing it differently or folding it, new shapes and forms appear. During the printing the tone has also changed a little bit. It is hard to tell, if the big image of the photo is a new original object or simply an image, a copy of the A4 colorspot.
In the process of deformation both in shape, mass and size, it has now become a sculptural object.

Third process:

The sculptural colorspot was like a drop of color on the brush, which could be used to make new patterns. The difference was that when painting with this abstract colorspot, auhtor didn’t have to paint further with a real brush, but with the placement in the room. Even though the object was meant as a practical solution in a staging, Eelmaa started to see more and more visual uses of it in the rehearsals. She decided to photograph a river after the rehearsal, relating to it as a picturesque abstract object.

When deforming the colorpsot - folding, placing it differently, author got many different abstract images, which all felt to be new and independent "originals". Here a dilemma of content arose: she photographed an object, which is a copy of a previous object, and I get an "original". Can an abstract image be a copy, isn’t the nature of abstract art to be an "original", without depicting anything, that already exists as an object. On each photo she has framed only some part of the objectified colorspot, when photographing some part of the whole, does it create a new original or does it stay as a part of a bigger picture?
But the fact, that she uses photography, which is not like painting, which can pretend things, that do not exist before creating the image. Photography in it’s nature assumes, that this what I depict is already there, it must exist. It is a double position, in which the reality and the past overlap each other. The reality is the moment when she photographs some part of the decoration and what she sees later on the picture, and the past is, that the same object has been different previously – so the same colorspot as an object, which we saw for the first time on the sketch – as a frame of a framed photo.
