What Can I Do?, 2017

Oil on canvas

Series "Demonstration"

"People are afraid of themselves, nowadays. They have forgotten the highest of all duties, the duty that one owes to one's self."

Oscar Wilde "The Portrait of Dorian Gray"

What can a face reveal to the public? It could demonstrate calm professionalism, sensual seduction or unshakable confidence. Those are acceptable. But we certainly don not want to show the judging public our fear, doubt, panic or physical frailty. Nonetheless, those emotions or weaknesses live with us and occasionally make themselves known. No one wants to reveal them. Demonstratively we are perfect beings that comply with sociaty’s exectations even when internally we want to scream, cry or give in to panic.

The paintings represent, on the one hand, emotions that we would like to hide and we struggle with internally, on the other hand, emotions that we gladly show to the world. We represent ourselves as happy, self-confident and successful. Internally, we go through disappointment, pain, despair and anger. Every painting represents an emotional state – indifference, hate, despair, sadness, disappointment or pride, joy, arrogance, deceptive self-confidence. This reflects individual hypocrisy towards the society and vice versa.
