VÕÕRANDUMINE FotoFest 2021

There are many glances at the possible forms of alienation: Finnish artist Susanna Salama presents an autobiographical series on loneliness in the exhibition. Living as a single mother in the middle of Finland’s native forest, 60 kilometers away from civilization, she has recorded her personal feelings through photographs through the image of a house as a metaphor reflecting the jungle psyche. Ukrainian artist Nikolay Karabinovych with his photo series and sound installation “The voice of thin silence” touches on the familiar theme of deportation and tells the story of his great-grandfather through place, time and sounds, having visited the deportation site more than 70 years later. In a slightly more humorous key, New York photographer David Williams tells the story of stereotypes and their alienation. Over the years, he has photographed men and their cats, trying to break the gender-discriminatory stereotype of cat aunts and referring to masculinity as a constructed trait. In addition to the mentioned artists, a photo wall illustrating the lockdown has been set up in one of the rooms of the Town Hall, where individual pictures have been collected from photographers from all over the world who have captured the current era through portraits and empty urban landscapes.
