This work is a part of master’s thesis and a long-term continuous project ‘Interposition’. The roots of the project are dating back to June 2020 when the first-ever global lockdown was easing, right after our lives had been changed drastically by the global pandemic. The focus point of the project is the borderline or the liminal space in between ‘the inside and the outside’: the digital and physical reality, an individual and his surroundings, the man-made structures and nature. The anthropological notion ‘liminality’ (first invented by the anthropologist Arnold van Gennep) can be described as a space resulting from passage and transition. A collective transformation that has occurred over these past two years. ‘Stay at home! Stay safe! Stay isolated! Verses that have gained a brand-new historical meaning over the past months and, quite paradoxically, unite a big part of the world being chanted in minds of millions of people. As global restrictions decrease widely, the question arises naturally – what happens when you leave the home? How is the sense of the time flow changing? And what about those that don’t even have a home? Or those that have not been able to be at their country due to circumstances? In a search of the universal home, it may be concluded that it is this housing called ‘body’ and it is the thought substance which formats the inner environment. After the period when the world stopped to carve a different comprehension, it is time to carry the home further.’ Meanwhile the isolating times when life in the cities used to be paralysed, a satisfaction for the scream of harmony had been found by going outside, beyond the threshold of home – in nature. Furthermore, quoting philosopher Michael Marder: ‘If we perceive the distance between ourselves and plants as something insuperable, it proves that we have been under a cultural repression in a length of millennials. But even in the history of Western philosophy some insights can be found about something vegetal in the constitution of a human psyche. [..] For Aristotle the structure of the soul relies on a principle that vegetal life is the basis of everything.’ During the development of the project, the interest expanded into the research of the sublime. Philosopher Kant distinguishes two notions of the sublime: the mathematically sublime and the dynamically sublime. In the case of both notions, the experience of the sublime consists both of visual pleasure and ‘negative liking’ or a touch of fear at the same time. The irresistibility of nature’s power certainly makes us, considered as natural beings, recognize our physical powerlessness, but at the same time it reveals the inner strength of the spirit. How to get in touch with the sublime in oppressed, over-civilised conditions? A possible answer to this question is the artistic practice of the artist – a direct use of the fire element in order to create artworks that would carry both liminality and the sublime feeling into themselves.
